Three tables and 20 chairs were the requirements for all of us to sit down and eat together. Fortunately, the 'school room' had plenty of open space accommodated the two extra tables. The cousins quickly opted for eating by themselves, allowing the adults to sit and enjoy their meals without having to extend firm stares and swift under the table kicks to address manners - most of the adults manners were quite acceptable.
After the first dinner was consumed, ie the children were done, the adults had just barely finished the appetizers, we were pleasantly surprised when the cousins all marched out their dirty plates to the kitchen, folded the table clothe and cleared all table accessories. I was amazed at the well mannered children, thinking this entertaining business will be a 'piece of cake.' Little did I suspect the ulterior motives - space for Lego. The tables clear, the parade of children began in the reverse direction, from the boys' room to the school room, each carrying a bin so large their arms were stretched to the max to grasp the edges.
The Lego play began and has not ended as fo this writing, early January. All good intentions of having sit down dinners were rapidly replaced by kneeling food service by the coffee table, children inhaling sufficient nutrients to sustain yet another marathon Lego building session. There are pretty houses, amazing contraptions and wicked weapons all happily co-existing in the newly renamed Lego Room.
