One of the Chinese students invited us to attend his theater performance. We lined up with a crowd of Chinese nationals outside the building and once inside were promptly and courteously directed to the second floor where we got front row seats. We expected to see a play based on Psycho and Cupid and on our way I thought it would have been a good idea to review the major plot line. It turned out that our definition of a play was a bit different - we enjoyed about two hours of a variety of talents, much a la America's Got Talent, intermixed with audience participation games, and even random drawings based on people's phones. Some of the performers used American songs, something familiar to our ears. The theater performance appeared to one of the talent acts, abbreviating the eight acts into eight tableaus scenes with a few lines in English. All in all the enjoyable play was over in a few brief minutes. It was an evening of cultural appreciation that we will not soon forget.
