October 1 Holiday

The People's Republic of China celebrates its independence day October 1. This year is the 69th year of the republic, and many Chinese national have a week off for the celebration. It is one of only a few longer holidays, and many Chinese nationals travel back home to visit family or head to a resort for some well-deserved vacation time.  Well, they have a few days off but need to make up the days, so in typical Chinese fashion, although it said Saturday on the calendar, it was Thursday, and although the calendar said it was Sunday it was Friday - confused?  Yes, so are we.

Bob was invited to celebrate the independence day at an international banquet held downtown Chongqing.  He came home to tell us all about the French red wine and the gourmet appetizers catered by the Intercontinental hotel in town.  He met several other westerners and exchanged pleasantries with consuls and dignitaries.

Yet, not everyone is off for the holiday. We had hoped for a day off from jack-hammering, alas the construction crew apparently does not get the day off.  Time off might only be feasible for the more privileged people. So we rejoice that the marching is over and that the only background noise is jack-hammering.
