Efficient Use of Space

Lukas most recent project is building yet another airplane. This one dwarfs all the others that he has constructed and we have been back to the Dollar Tree store twice to get more foam board and spent quite some time at the office supply store waiting for large print outs of plans.

Unfortunately, the office supply printer could not print to scale, so Lukas’ first job was to scale up the plans – lots of math practice. Once the plans were the proper size, it was time to cut out the foam. The largest flat surface in his room was his bed, so up came the mattress. Yes, he has a floor, however, to use it for cutting out foam board would mean picking up and clearing away….

The wing is finally complete, and due to careful construction, thoughtful use of materials, and creative solutions this almost 6ft long wing weighs a scant 575 grams.
