Pomelo

Pomelo - one of our new favorite fruits. When we first arrived here in Chongqing, the fruit stands offered delicate miniature plums and crisp Asian pears.  The season changed and the watermelon guy, whose truck had been filled with green melons, was suddenly filled with large yellow orbs.  At first glance, it looked like he was selling supersized grapefruits.  Although in the same family as grapefruit, the pomelo is sweeter and the juice sacs much larger. As the season progresses, all the fruit stands as well as the grocery stores display the large, eye-catching yellow balls. Scent and weight are how we pick a good one. Based on pricing, it is apparent that the ruby red version is considered better - we have found the pale yellow to be just as tasty and often a bit juicier. Inside the tough peel and the thick pith are large sections of deliciousness - and lots of vitamin C. Hauling these up the hill certainly must count as a workout, each weighs about 4-5 lbs.
