Happy Easter

Easter Sunday was a great day for the Severinghaus' family. As church greeters we were 'assigned' the 11:30 service, meaning a slow, leisurely morning complete with raspberry rolls and Easter basket candy. Lukas and Noah even had time to decorate some eggs before we all donned our finest and headed to church.
Although the boys are older, they are not too old for an egg hunt. Four boys all armed with their nicest Easter basket - aka Safeway bags, or Lucky bags - set out to look for brightly colored plastic eggs filled with jelly beans. The squeals of delight, the fun chasing and amused parents eying eggs that are blatantly overlooked made for a fun hunt, albeit quick, the entire loot was 30 eggs.

Our friends stayed for dinner and we had a wonderful time celebrating the Risen Lord, fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ and the many blessings God has poured out over us.

Only after the fact, did I realize that we never captured the beautiful Easter basket filled to the brim with chocolate and treats provided by Grammy and Pappy. The Easter basket is so large it does not even fit into a plastic bin!  And the treats were delicious, thank you Grammy and Pappy!

Lemons and lemonade

It is a familiar saying: "When life gives you lemon make lemonade." Well, it is not only a wise metaphor for life, it have practical implications as well. In our back yard is a small lemon tree that has continually produced lemons for the past two years.
Noah's desire when we moved into this house was to have some fruit trees and desiring to please our son we dutifully headed to the local nursery.  I thought this an easy request to fulfill, little did I know my utter inexperience in gardening shining through brightly. Fruit trees take years to produce fruit, and although we are wanting to teach our children patience, we are not here years to wait and see.
As we wandered around in our overgrown back yard in those first weeks of home ownership, we spotted this small size tree... what could it be? A friend surmised it was a lemon tree but also proclaimed it will never bear fruit back there...  Thinking it could not hurt to give it a try, we had little to loose, we pruned it a bit, gave it some fertilizer and pulled out the biggest and thickets weeds that surrounded the base. My minimal effort paid off handsomely, and the tree has not stopped blooming and producing.
We pick fresh lemons for our food, drinks, fill jars for decorations on mantels and on table tops, and some lemons even become make shift balls thrown over the fence, and others are becoming food for back yard critters.

To discourage these unwanted visitors, Bob and the boys picked a large tub full of lemons and with the help of Bob's juicer we made gallons of lemonade, which we drink, use to marinate food in and add to smoothies, since there is not enough left for sorbet  it is time to send the boys out picking again.

Working Saturday

On Saturday, the boys and Bob set out to do some yard work; maybe it was inspired by the gardening chores Noah and Bob did in MO?
Our backyard is filled with beautiful bushes and plants but many are suffering from years of neglect and lack of TLC. Our Birds of Paradise bush was at least 6 feet in diameter and it could soon qualify for its own jungle designation.. but the size impeded the blooming.
Noah set out with a shovel, then switched to saw and finally to pick ax to get to the bottom of these thick, sturdy roots. Hours of hard work along with a few Diet Cokes, and the plant is looking very shapely.

In the late afternoon, Bob and the boys set out to explore the great unknown behind the fence. Armed with an Honduran pocket knife - also known as a machete - and some rope, they headed down hill. As a precaution, the boys were dressed to cover all parts of their bodies apart from the face, since there is a lot of Poison Oak back there. Exhausted, but exhilarated they returned a few hours later, the boys taking showers while Bob whacked away at the weeds climbing up and threatening to take over the stately Eucalyptus trees that edge our property down by the little creek.  There is now a path to the creek, will the boys ask for fishing poles next?

Crystal Bridge Art Museum

Noah, Bob, Grammy and Pappy took a field trip to the new Crystal Bridge Art Museum in Arkansas. The unusual architecture along with interesting art made a great impression on Noah who happily snapped away using Bob's camera.
Back home in California, Noah described each photo in great detail, remembering and recounting all that he saw in and around each photo he took.

Library

Lukas and I made a quick trip to the library and this is what he brought home, easy light night reading..
I am glad he did not ask me to read aloud from these...

Noah's photos from travel day

Noah and Bob headed to Missouri last week to visit with family. Lukas and Mamma stayed in town, taking care of Lucky.

Our most expensive carry on luggage - straight from Safeway :-)

Noah took some unusual photos on his day of travel - it is clear what is on his mind....

His artistic interest finally won over and he began to photograph interesting characteristics of the airport.

Impromptu Science

The SodaStream canister was almost empty, time to head back to the store to trade it in for a full canister.  Lukas realized it was not completely empty and that prompted a spontaneous science experiment. Would balloons filled with carbon dioxide float, sink or remain suspended in air - ie is carbon dioxide heavier, lighter or equal to air?
The balloon fell quickly but that did not stop the boys from repeating the experiment until the canister was completely and absolutely empty.
